Chapter Ten

Dan accepted a cold drink from Suzanne, not sure whether he should drink it or douse himself with it. Whew. He swiped at the beads of perspiration on his lip.

He’d been completely unprepared for the sight of Maddie in that short little smock. For a second there in the hall he had felt like he’d been tossed headfirst into a blast furnace.

He’d been stunned. He’d known she had legs of course; it stood to reason there was something beneath all those layers of black fabric. But he’d never expected them to be great legs.

He shifted in his chair and swallowed hard. Really great legs.

There was a lot more and less to Maddie than met the eye, even a trained eye like his. She’d really pulled one over on him. On everyone. She wasn’t dumpy. She was amazing.

The shapeless clothes she favored added twenty or thirty imaginary pounds to her tall frame. What a shock to discover she had a waist and that her arms and legs were toned and shapely.

Maddie wasn’t the willowy type. She was womanly the way Dan thought women ought to be. Strong and healthy with luscious curves and intriguing shadows.

Dan drank deeply to relieve his suddenly dry mouth. Maddie had some killer curves.

He wished he’d handled the whole thing differently. Letting his jaw drop to the floor when he first saw her was stupid. Worse, he knew Maddie mistook his response for horror. Then to cap it all off, he accused her of sabotaging herself. Very stupid.

He’d spoken in anger. He wasn’t angry with Maddie but with her family, who had raised her to believe she was a giant. He was angry with a world that set such a narrow definition of beauty, then worshipped it above all things.

And he was angry with himself. As a fashion photographer he bore the guilt of supplying unrealistic images as the standard for beauty.

Thomas swept into the reception room on a burst of energy. “I’m here before noon, Suzanne, just as I promised. Alert the media.”

“Hi, Thomas. Dan and Maddie are here. Maddie went back for her facial and shampoo about an hour ago, so she’s due at your chair any minute.”

Thomas turned to zero in on Dan. His face split in a wide grin as he hurried toward him with outstretched arms. “Dan, my friend, welcome home.”

Thomas was an interesting combination of elegance and flamboyance. He looked as if he belonged on stage. An inch or two over six feet with mahogany skin and bleached blond hair, Thomas always dressed in severe black. He needed only a whirling satin-lined cape and silk top hat to complete the image of magician.

Dan stood to embrace him. “I really appreciate you doing this for me.”

Thomas batted the remark away. “Are you kidding? It’s my pleasure. Now tell me, how have you been?”

Other than Maddie, Thomas was the only person Dan could be completely honest with. “Out of focus. Trying to figure out what to do with my life.”

Thomas frowned. “Still in career limbo?”

“For now.
